As a Canadian Food Blogger, I am taking part in the BioSnacky 10-Day Sprouting Challenge. A.Vogel Canada provided me with a bioSnacky 3-tier sprouter with organic sprouting seeds. I got to grow the sprouts in my own kitchen and blog my experience.
I grew three types of sprouts in the ten days. They were little radish, mung beans and alfalfa sprouts. The sprouter was easy to assemble out of the box. The seeds started to grow within the day. This is a great project for kids. It’s a lot of fun watching the water pour down the different levels and the sprouter is transparent, making it easy for kids to see the growth of the seeds.
The amount of sprouts is almost overwhelming. Between my daughter and I there were too many sprouts and I gave some away to my parents. Next time I plan on only growing a level or two instead of all three. This makes the sprouter ideal for a larger family and the turn around time is quick. You also could stagger the starting date of the seeds so you always have sprouts ready to eat every couple days. I’m going to continue growing sprouts and developing recipes with them. I’m thinking off the fresh sprouts during the winter.
I ended up eating my sprouts on a lot of salads, sandwiches and deviled eggs. The little radish sprouts were by far my favourite, with the alfalfa sprouts coming in second. Any recipe you would put radishes in would benefit from the little radish sprouts. My favourite thing I made was a tie between potato salad and deviled eggs. The sprouts added just enough mild heat to the dishes.
Sprouts are full of bio available vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, phytochemicals and digestible energy. This is what helps a germinating plant to grow and are very healthful for us to eat. A raw diet benefits from incorporating sprouts into your meals.
Here’s a list of wonderful looking recipes from other blogs to use up your sprouts. You can thank me later.
